TRYHRD - Oz's most powerful Commodore steps up!

Posted: 02.02.2012 11:23

Rumour has it that Craig Munro has applied to legally change his name to ‘Mr. Horsepower Hero’, and his latest venture certainly makes a compelling argument as to why.

After campaigning his VX Clubsport TRYHRD successfully at the Summernats Horsepower Heroes competition and pushing his twin turbo LSX block to the 1,800hp vicinity, Craig decided to retire the car to street duties and even brought it along to the Street Commodores Cruise for Charity 7 in Victoria in 2010. Obviously the car was tamed down for the street, with Craig casually shrugging off the 1,000-odd-horsepower it was making at the time. Well, he’s changed it up again, and what’s potentially more amazing is that he’s brazen enough to drive it nigh on every day!

“We’ve gone for bigger turbos but a smaller cam’, so it’s coming on boost a lot sooner,” he insists; adding “it’s actually a really good street car,” as if to say that the 1,400hp the car is making now could ever be considered streetable! “Yeah we’re just driving it on the street and taking people for rides. I installed a few in-car cameras because I’m so busy steering the thing that I don’t get to see their reactions… I love to see the expressions on their faces when it hits boost!” he laughs. “We’re actually taking Sachin Tandulkar for a run out at Calder… he was out here and heard about the car and wanted to see what it was like,” explains Craig of the status the VX is developing!

And while this is all fun and games Craig has settled down to serious business on another front, looking to add some more silverware to the old pool room. You’ll see in the photos what is essentially two of the biggest tures you’re ever likely to see, soon to be connected to a motor with the power potential of a nuclear submarine, all tied together with an intricate spider web of cromoly tubing. It’s Craig’s new drag car, and in true Munro-style he’s coming out with the biggest and best guns, the most horsepower and looking for a win.

“We’ve just ordered the motor from the states. It’s an NRE twin turbo big block. We paid a bit more and got the billet alloy block. It’s going to be 630 cubes and they’re quoting around 2,700hp,” Craig says without breaking a sweat. “We’re building it to the Pro Street Association rules, not that there are many!” he jests. “At the moment we’re just trying to get the weight down so everything is going to be cromoly and carbon fibre… we’ll be looking for low-6s,” he says in the most serious tone he’s adopted for our entire conversation.

We’ll be eagerly watching this amazing feat of Australian engineering come together. Stay tuned!

C4C8 Tasmania - Sunday 30/10

Posted: 25.10.2011 09:50

We're wrapping up the 2011 leg of Cruise for Charity this weekend in Tasmania, and we know for a fact that it's going to be an awesome end to what has been an amazing year for the event.

We're fresh off the back of records in just about every state and we just know that the island state is going to turn on some of their best to wind out C4C for another year.

For those in the state the event kicks off at 9am at the Cadbury carpark in Claremont. See the below poster for more details.

It's also worth mentioning the many interstaters that are traveling to the event. Our C4C8 superheroes Big Kev Dowse and Peter Vohradsky are currently en route from NSW, making it 5 from 6 events this year. Their amazingly generous support of the event deserves to be noted - these people truly typify what is good and right about the Commodore scene.

We also have a handful of Commodores making the trip across the way from Victoria to see what the Tassie event is all about. Put bluntly it's going to be a great weekend to be a Tasmanian Commodore driver, so get to cleaning those cars and we'll catch you on Sunday morning!

CWT Targa Commodore update

After a short setback with the assembly of their amazing COME Racing motor, the crew behind the CWT Targa Commodore build are back on their feet thanks to the team at COME.

COME have truly gone above and beyond here and turned around what could have been a crippling blow for the build. Work will now begin on filling it with the best bits COME have to offer including a forged-internal stroker motor, their brand spanking VN alloy heads, their amazing single plane manifolds and all the other fruit.

Don't forget to check out the team's Facebook page, HERE
