Peter Brocks 1973 Holden LJ Torana XU-1 has sold to a Melbourne enthusiast for a record setting price of $500,000, the highest amount any Holden has ever fetched before. The Melbourne construction company owner bought the fully restored Torana from former HDT engine builder Ian Tate which has been fully rebuilt and restored to original 1973 specifications. It is the very same car that Brock managed a 2nd place at Bathurst even after the Torana ran out of fuel, forcing team mate Doug Chivas to push the car to into pit lane where then team members were then permitted to help. The Tates are still planning showing the car and including it at historic race meetings, with the new anonymous owner referring to himself as merely a ‘custodial owner’. The previous sale record held by any Holden was thought to be when a 1941 FX Prototype sold for $400,000 back in 2001, which is now kept in Canberra’s National Museum.
