12/12/06 GM Invest $10 Million Into New Rollover Crash Facility

After two years and $10 Million in the making, the GM Rollover Crash Facility has been finally been completed and is now being used to research centre to find out exactly what causes injuries in roller crash situations.
GM has taken the step forward to now become the only auto company that has integrated rollover testing into all areas of other impact tests. This has enabled them to complete their own series of tests, without having to wait in line with other automakers to share one facility located in North America.

Bob Lange, Executive Director of Vehicle Structure and Safety Integration said “We started thinking about building this facility for years ago, and two years ago we made the $10 million commitment to build it. We’ve been learning about frontal crashes for the last 45 years, but significant investigation into rollovers really only began in the late 1970s and early 1980s, so we’re clearly not at the same learning stage with rollovers.

We have learned enough to classify types of rollover crashes, and our knowledge about dummy motion is reliable to the first time a vehicle hits the ground in a rollover. But we also know that dummy after the first hit unrepeatable, We’ve learned that our crash sensing for rollovers must be much more predictive than for other types of crashes.”
